A new project on Sustainable Green Transition in the Barents Region, BAVIS-project, was launched in Vuokatti, Kainuu Region, on 13-14 November 2023. The project is led by the Finnish Environment Institute with the support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland (IBA-funding). The initiative is in line with the priorities of the Barents Working Group on Environment and its Subgroup on Sustainable Production and Consumption.

The workshop gathered together 22 Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian experts from different fields to discuss environmental challenges in the battery value chain. The focus was on the Nordic collaboration and especially on the Barents region. The group also visited Terrafame mine and battery chemicals factory, which is one of the biggest producers of nickel sulphates for car batteries in Europe.

The next workshops of the project are planned to be held in Sweden and Norway next year. The results of the project are to be published in 2025. The project team expresses gratitude to all the participants for lively discussions and valuable contribution during the workshop.
