With a strong interest in all things international relations and security, Miriam is excited about the opportunity to learn more about multilateral cooperation and the affairs of the Barents region. She notes that the current political climate makes it an especially intriguing time for the internship as there have been many recent changes. For example, the latest developments around United States, NATO and Russia will undoubtedly shape future cooperation in the Barents region, she believes.
When it comes to her new home, Kirkenes will be a different experience after living in cities such as Tampere and Vancouver in the past. However, living in a smaller town and being surrounded by nature is something Miriam is quite excited about. She has always wanted to experience life in the High North, and combining that with an appealing internship opportunity made for a rather easy decision on her part.
Despite it being only a few days since her arrival, Miriam has already begun to appreciate life in Kirkenes: "I really enjoy my quiet morning walk to work, it is so peaceful. Feeling the sun on my face and hearing the crunch of snow under my feet may be small things but they bring me so much joy."
Miriam is looking forward to getting to know the area and its people better. Additionally, she has plans to explore the wonderful Norwegian outdoors as much as possible during her stay: "I even packed my hiking boots in anticipation of some very spectacular hikes!"
Welcome to Kirkenes, Miriam!
